Did you install the drivers for the network adapter?
Do you get an error when you try to connect? If so, what does the error message say?

You can download drivers from the network card manufacturer's site but in order to do that, you need to know the make and model of the card.
If you don't have that information, download and run Everest (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/everest-home-edition). It will inventory your computer and hopefully tell you the make and model of the network card (also called network adapter and ethernet card).
