Yes it's called wireless internet, and people not putting a password on their connections. There's actually a number of videos online showing people going around with their computers in vans, stealing internet from houses.

It is also very illegal and there are as many video's/news items about people being arrested and charged for theft.

Look at it this way, most that go around stealing service and getting caught are perverts and pedophiles . If you do it and get caught, guess what category your name will fall into. Your family and friends would be wondering what perverted secrets you are hiding.

In some coffee shops and hotels and pubs it's not illegal - it's a service they provide.

lets not forget most mcdonalds However, my advise is if you use a coffee shop, better get a coffee as you work on your computer. Some coffee shops frown on individuals who uses without making a purchase.

There is no such thing as "free internet". No matter where or how you connect to the net, somebody is paying for it - whether that be the family across the road who hasn't secured their wireless network, or the hotel you stay at who provide it as a service. The important thing is, you only connect to networks where you are entitled to do so; otherwise it is stealing, and is both morally and legally wrong. If you're not stealing it, you're paying for it - which may be via the cafe, where you pay for it with the food you (supposedly) buy; or your city which uses your taxes to pay for it.

There are certain areas of cities like Philadelphia, LA, New York, & others where wireless service is free. Around colleges & universities there is often free service. Where I live a lot of people use the University wireless, don't really know how legal that is for non-students.

The only real free ISP is 10 hours a month on dial-up.

They throw so many ads in your face [when their software is running] that I am *not*
mentioning their name.
