Question ??Internet Explorer stops working, still connected to net...

I have a Gateway Laptop connected to my family's wireless internet (via Verizon + router.) The problem is that the Internet Explorer or Mozilla Browser pages will stop working after anywhere from 2 hours to 24 hours. By "stop working" I mean that the browser will still open, but no web pages will be displayed as if I had no internet connection. However, I know that I am still connected to the internet as the little icon in the left bottom of the screen tells me so... but also my instant messenger service still works. Once I reboot my computer the situation is corrected for the next 2 - 24 hours.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Internet Explorer and have also tried Mozilla Firefox instead of IE. In my research today I found advice to uninstall and reinstall Winsock registries. I don't know what these are and haven't tried it yet but thought I'd get some advice from all you wonderful people....

Thank you greatly!!!
