hello. this is my second plea for help with a new install of 2k.
thank you in advance.
i recently installed a optiplex gx110 motherboard. it has an ethernet connection integrated within. 3com.
after installing the os, i plugged the modem's cable in, clicked on ie and well nothing but the error page. i went to ie's properties and made sure everything was right. no change. i checked device manager, the 3com was working properly. i went to the command prompt, ipconfig showed the 169 ip address. i released it but got an error doing so. "local area connection was automatically configured and does not have a dhcp address"
i tried a netsh command but that did not work either. "the command was not found"
i went to local area properties and checked out things there. normal. ok
so i uninstalled the tcp/ip stack rebooted. reinstalled the stack. checked the status of the local area connection. data is being sent but 0 received.
went back to the command prompt and did a self ping. that went fine but obviously i could not ping out.
i uninstalled the 3com rebooted. checked the stack then checked tha lac status; data sent but none received.
went to the extreme. reformatted hard drive and installed 2k again. checked everything again. same problem.
went out bought a dynex ethernet card installed it. i thought it was going to be over. i disabled the 3com, made sure device manager saw the dynex, clicked on ie....cursed electricity and technology.
came back to the computer. played with the duplex modes with no results. went to the administrative tools and tweaked with the networking settings there. nothing.
just as a side note: the bios does see both cards. i have used two cat5 cables and the internet service works as you can see.
any suggestions would be great. thank you
