My restore program on XP doesn't work reliably, what might be restore software that seems more reliable?

Depends on what type of restore you want.

There are backup programs such as Acronis True Image that will take a full copy of your drive.

and programs such as Symantec Save and Restore which let your backup individual files and full disks.

One word of caution, as with windows restore, if you find you have problems with your system because of nasties, you need to get rid of any restore/backup you may have - not matter the software.
