Is it "male" on both ends or "female" on both ends (i.e. does it have pins or holes)

They both have male ends.
Thanks Nige.

Sounds like a pretty standard VGA (or SVGA) cable.
Whilst CRT screens often have the monitor end hard-wired inside the case, LCD screens (especially those that are DVI capable) need a cable such as that to connect from the input on the monitor to the Video card output.

Just browse a site that sells cables. You will be able to find out what they are called.

btw, I just googled for "monitor cable" at this was the top link.

You need to get off your high horse if i went to the top link it would of taken me to
http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/default.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1
And my cable is fixed to my monitor so i had no reason to believe it was a monitor cable,i simply used it as a guide.
I think it is a shame that you had to loose the good spirit of this site by adding your sarcasm especially when the question had allready been answered
Nige.

So did you use common sense and try the next link?
Sorry, but we are not just here to give people what they want. We hope we can educate people so that in future they don't need our help.
It may seem a bit backward for a tech help site, but maybe in the future you could answer the same question for someone else by showing them a link that you found on google.
There probably will be an industrial standard name for the cable, but if someone says to me "what's the cable that's connected to the monitor?" then my first thought, sarcastic or not, is to answer "It's the monitor cable"
There are thousands of people that use this site and all have different personalities.
I happen to be sarcastic, but I hope I did help you out.

Whoa guys.
Nige had a seperate double-ended cable that wasn't connected to his monitor.
When describing it, he said the connections on each end LOOKED the same as the one on the end of his hard-wired monitor cable.
Nige, degsy's point above is one I was about to make as well.
A user comes here and posts once or twice, we'll generally hold their hand and do all the work for them.
You on the other hand are the sort of user we kind of expect to be learning how to help yourself and help others - that's how many of us started doing this.
Given that you identified the same pin layout on the plugs as on your monitor cable, it was probably a safe place to start the Search Engine hunt.

Ok chaps I got the answer I was looking for and I thankyou I also apologies to degsy who has helped me in the past even though I still think the answer was a little sharp, on a good day I would have thought nothing of it. But what’s done is done so please accept my apologies and lets all crack on. :)
