How or what Kind of external hard drive allows up to transfer the recored dvr shows to the hard drive .. I was told it could be done but I have been able to get it to work ... Tried my westerdidgtal 250hd with not luck . call dish net work they said they heard it working with specific types....

Once the DISH drive is plugged into the PC (it's a regular PC drive, apparently), use a utility called DishRip to transfer the content.

will this work with vista ..... I have 625 ..... My computer and reciver are in diffrent rooms do it get a super long double ended usb cable or .... I was trying to use my external hard drives to download it and then from the external to my computer is this possible ///// what kind of cable do I use ... I have a usb connection on the reciver and the other end should be connected to another usb or some where else ...

The USB port on the receiver is not used for that purpose. It's reserved for the PocketDish product. In order to get the recorded programs onto PC digitally, you need to physically remove the DISH unit's hard drive and connect it to a PC. This may void your warranty though. Or, you can buy a PocketDish to act as a middleman.
