Arrow Disable or run IE7 in compatibility mode-Vista

Does anyone know a way to disable IE7 in Vista Home Premium? I assume it can't be uninstalled which would be my first choice. If not, how about steps to run IE7 in XP compatibility mode? New Vista computer, DSL won't work with Vista running IE7. Works with XP running IE7. Windstream doesn't seem to concerned about running a fix anytime soon for their modems . Thank you.

you cannot run msie in compatibility mode because it is a part of windows. At least that what it said when I tried

maybe its time to try another browser like firefox or opera.

Can you connect at all? That is, do any other internet programs connect...instant messenger, email, etc.?

Or is it that you're trying to use your ISP's setup disk and it won't work? My ISP's setup CD won't work with Vista but it's easy enough to set up the connection manually.

When I first tried to connect with Vista, I was getting nowhere...until I remembered to power cycle the router. If you don't have a router, have you tried power cycling the modem?

Yes, Windstream has it’s own setup disk for their DSL modem. It runs on Vista, downloads their “Windstream Broadband Check Up Center”, unpacks it (and during this process I can download windows updates etc. Vista will even tell me that it connects to the Web). However, the broadband check up center errors out when it tries to install and won’t run in Vista and at that point the connection is broken. I’ve tried power cycling the external modem, but it just won’t connect without their little “Broadband Check Up Center” which is extremely provoking.

Their support team says, “Yes, we know there is a problem with Vista running IE7. We can’t do anything else.” Some customer support!! At work an XP computer running IE7 runs the Broadband Check Up Center and hence the DSL line. Background: we live in the Ozarks mountains, Windstream is the ONLY provider of DSL anywhere. The only other choice is Dial-up which is no option.

I would try setting up manually but it doesn’t dial a number since it’s an “always on” connection that needs the user name, password, first and last name of user and phone number of the account and then needs to “identify” the modem itself to approve the connection which is beyond setting up a manual connection in XP (which I have done) – at least for me. It can’t be installed using Mozilla’s Firefox either. Thinking of installing IE6 and trying to run the program in that window. Does anyone know if running the two IE’s (6&7) will be a problem in Vista? That’s the only “work around” I can come up with at this time.

I really appreciate the help.

I have the same sort of PPPOE DSL (at least, I guess it's the same...requires a user name and password) so I did take the router out of the connection and try setting up the connection manually before I posted. Vista hooked right up.

A Google search for "ie6 on vista" will turn up some possibilities. You might look through those to see if there's anything you want to try.

Another option might be to use a router (about $30 or so, U.S.). Vista connects to the router, the router is configured to connect to your ISP, leaving the Vista problems with the ISP's software out of the mix.

Thumbs up

Thank you!! WHEW! If anyone else has their ISP tell you they just don't know how to connect Vista running IE7 to the internet since their app. won't work, just install the router (I was also setting up a wireless network) with the DSL modem on and connected to the router and Vista WILL find the internet and connect. Didn't need the program after all!!! All right, I'm on the internet again -despite Vista's quirks (or ISP quirks I should say). THANK YOU, MIZ!!!!!!!!!
