I Kind of have a similar problem, My computer recognizes the fact that there is a DVD rom installed, but it will not function. If I open up "My Computer" there is no Icon for the drive, but if I open the device manager it does show the driver, but with bad drivers. windows tells me that the driver installation failed and that I should contact the manufacturer. I did that and they are useless I cant find the drivers to download. when I try to reinstall the drivers through windows it tells me the drivers are up to date.

I went to my local Techie store and asked a few questions, They told me Optical drives don't require drivers. I don't believe that because if that was the case I wouldn't be having this problem.

I am not asking for someone to provide me with drivers, just a point in the right direction.

and the drive I am trying to use is a Pioneer DVR-1810.

The tech was correct. Windows supplies any drivers needed for all optical drives. I see you're using Vista and there seems to be quite a few problems with Vista and optical drives. So, I'm going to move your post to that forum in hopes someone can help you. And it's probably not a hardware problem but software ie, Vista.
