Windows Media Player Help

I have windows xp and I downloaded windows media player 9. The sound is terrible. A static sound is in the background and when I try to use the sound max feature on my computer the static sound gets worse. Is there a fix for this problem or should I uninstal and go with another media player if so which one I'm not sure which one came with my computer. Thanks

I wouldn't have thought that installing a media player would have done any lasting damage - it's possible that it's just reset some of the mixer settings to a combination that's not right - if you go into the multimedia part of the control panel you should be able to play about with things there.

Specifically check that the microphone channel in recording is turned off
