I am running WIN98SE and have received the following error notification when I attempted to open an email link on a forum:

"Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\HMMAPI.DLL
The system cannot find the path specified."

Could someone please explain what is happening and how I might fix things? I need to forward a message to the other person but it's impossible with this problem. (As a test, I clicked on various other email links for other users of the forum and received the same response.)

Thanks

Hi rodgerm, try this. Go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following command and hit Enter.

regsvr32 hmmapi.dll

You should see a short message stating the command was successful. Now reboot.

Let us know if this helped. If you get an error message, please post it here in full.

Hello AnnMarie:

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.

I have taken the action you suggested and have received the following error window in response:

RegSvr32
LoadLibrary ("hmmapi.dll") failed - one of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.

I take from this that it would appear to be some type of registry problem -- an area that causes me to break out in a cold sweat as I don't understand it and am always afraid of creating complete disaster if I touch it. If there is a reasonably simple "fix" that an old man can handle, I'll be willing to try.

Hi Roger, it may be that you have a corrupted or missing file but repairing Internet Explorer may fix the problem. Let's give it a go.

Close IE and go to Start > Settings and open Control Panel. Doubleclick on Add/Remove Programs and look in the list of installed programs for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. When you find it, select it with your mouse and then click on Add/Remove. A dialogue box will open offering you three choices. Choose Repair Internet Explorer and follow the prompts.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi once again AnnMarie...

I apologize; I do not use any version of IE, thus I'll have to live with this problem.

Thanks once again for taking the time to help me out with this problem.

What browser do you use to connect to the Internet with?

In that case, just installing IE6 (even if you dont use it) should fix your problem Roger. You can download it from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en).
