I recently reinstalled vista on my laptop due to a crash (don't ask me what my four year old did, because i don't know!), and now my mouse is doing something I'm sure is supposed to be helpful to some people, but it's driving me crazy! This happens with the laptop touchpad, and both of the other mice I've plugged in. When i click and hold something to drag it like a scroll bar or resizing a window or moving a window across the screen, it won't let go until i click again. I hate this! I can't find anything in my mouse settings anywhere to make it stop. Has anyone had this problem, and were you able to turn it off?

have you gone to the laptops manufacturers website to see if they vista drivers for your touchpad.

yes, i installed the drivers from dell. I forgot to mention that before it crashed and i reinstalled, i didn't have this problem. Also, it's not just with the touchpad, but with other usb mice i plug in.

okay, i have officially identified what the problem is, still can't find a fix for it. after an hour with dell, their solution was to exchange my computer for a new one!
the synaptics touchpad has the "drag lock" ability. This does exactly what i'm describing as my "problem". Only thing is.. checked or unchecked, it still does it. Now, i know i should be able to uninstall drivers and reinstall, but when i did, it was still acting like the drivers are there. anyolne know the best way to delete all traces of the stupid synaptics mouse driver without having to run a fresh install of windows all over again?

In Control Panel>Mouse>Activities tab, is ClickLock checked? If so, uncheck it, click OK.
If it's not checked, check it, click the Settings button and move the slider to the right ("Long"), click OK and OK again. While that won't turn ClickLock off, it may make it so that you don't hold it down long enough for ClickLock to engage.

Thanks, I've already tried that. You muse have a different mouse driver, because mine doesn't let me set the length, and it's not called clicklock.

I fixed it! I used uninstall programs to get rid of the mouse driver. when i did, contraol panel gave me default settings on my mouse again, including "clicklock" which was checked. I unchecked it, problem gone! Now I'm going to reinstall the mouse drivers so i can have full function of my touchpad, this time with clicklock off, thank God! Truly! Saves me from replacing the computer as dell suggested, such idiots.
Thanks guys.
