Angry Arrg WMP!!

Very annoying problem. Was wondering if I could reinstall Windows media player for Vista Home Premium some way, somehow. I got so many broken codec's and what not, that I can barely play much. I try to go about getting the codec's one by one. But it just redirects me WMP 11 download. Anyway to reinstall it? Could I just download WMP 11 from microsoft and install that?

Also I would be very thankful if you could help with this other problem. WMP related(sorta) of course. I get this Nero error message alot. Seems to always have to do with videos. Either I be trying to delete one, play one, or edit one in Movie Maker. It says 'This Program requires the file advrcntr2.dll, which was not found on this system.'.

Ditto, I made sure I uninstalled/got rid of everything that was nero 6. Which if I recall, has issues with Vista in the first place. My take on it is that the computer used nero in some way or another with video files. Nero 6 was already on this pc when I got it. The OS before Vista was Windows Media Center Edition. Eventually after clicking 'OK' on the dozen error messages, it goes away. It even goes as far as freezeing up the pc when I try to move a video to the recycle bin. Because of all the same error windows popping up I guess <_<

Help? Suggestions?

You still have remains of NERO, probably hidden in the registry.

Download and run their clean tool/registry checker:

Alright, did that. Says no drivers found. Clicked that registry checker for the heck of it, didn't appear to do anything. I guess that's what it was suppose to do. Still the same thing though.

Go back and just download and run the NERO Clean Tool, it should get rid of that stuff.

Yea, I was a little confused. Got it now.

Now to just see if I can get the right codecs for WMP. I found what I need then it redirects me to a WMP 11 download. Which says it's for XP not Vista. So I don't know if I should download that or not.

So even though it says 'Download Windows Media player for XP'. It's still alright for Vista? Wow i've never been so confused.

"redirects me to a WMP 11 download"

Are you being redirected to the link I posted???

If you do a windows update it should recommend the update. When you get to the update select "Custom" that way you can chose which updates you want.

If you mean this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

..then yes. Which is for XP. The link you gave...i'm sorry but I can't seem to find on that page, what I need. I'm trying to play a ASF file, I think that's what it is. It's from my digital camera. I'm just trying to put together a video for a project i'm doing. Funny enough it seems to play the video in movie maker. But it plays it for 10 seconds before completely going black and loses audio. Here's what I get after trying to play the video in WMP and clicking 'web help'.

'You've encountered an error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion of the file) because the Microsoft ADPCM Format (2) codec is not installed on your computer.

The missing codec might be available to download from the Internet. To search for the Microsoft ADPCM Format (2) codec, see WMPlugins.com.'

Wmplugins.com doesn't seem to have the plugin. I then run a google search for the it. I find it(sort of) and it takes me to that link.

I've tried everything basicly. Like converting the file to a different format etc.. And no, windows update doesn't recommend any update or custom update I would need.

Jerebear,
Here's the link again that Murf originally gave you (in non-URL format). It does go to the Vista WMP v11. Note that it's different than the link you provided which, as you noted, goes to the XP version.

microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx

In URL format: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...a/default.mspx

The link location you provided was (non-URL format):

microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&displaylang=en

I honestly don't know what to do. I'm pulling my hair out over this. I'm guessing I got the right download. Says it's only for XP but states that it can restore WMP and Vista's KN and N editions. So, download that but of couse it's lower than the version I have so it won't install. My Version is as updated as much as it can be. So then I take instructions from Microsoft's website on how to uninstall WMP. Didn't know it was as simple as going in control panel - add and remove programs. So I click the program and then click unstall. Need adminstrator permission. So I do that and......nothing happens. Like I didn't click anything. Nada, zip, yada yada etc...

I'm honestly on the edge here. Got most of my filming done just need the videos to work in Movie Maker.

Any commands I could put in Run that would uninstall WMP and runtime 11? Am I still not getting the right download? I don't see where from that link you gave me, where it says download Vista's WMP 11. But I believe I got the right one. Oh well....

Hi Jerebear,
You're not going crazy. I see what you're talking about now. The links initially go to a Microsoft screen with a picture stating "Windows Media Player 11. Turn it up in Windows Vista".
Clicking that picture brings you here [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../default.aspx]. In that window it says "Windows Media Player 11 is designed to work with all editions of Windows Vista, including the N and KN editions, which do not include Windows Media Player and related technologies." So WMP v11 is the right one for Vista.

Selecting the "Download Now" button brings you to the actual WMP v11 download window (which may require Microsoft Genuine Software certification). There it identifies the download as "Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP". (Confirmation of what you've been seeing)
However, that page also states that WMP v11 is supported on "Windows Vista Business N; Windows Vista Home Basic N; Windows XP Home Edition N; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional N; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition".

The system requirements for WMP v11 are here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...emrequirements
Verify that you meet those requirements.

I'd suggest starting over (uninstall, reboot, reinstall). Go here for install/remove instructions for WMP v11.
