Hi I have a old sony vaio with windows 98 on it. everything works fine but the laptop can't detect my network card. I have a Xicom Realport Ethernet 10/100+modem 56 REM56G. It's old and out dated but I can't get a LAN connection. I formated a while ago wiht windows 2000 and that o/s detected the ethernet card and i was able to connect on line automatically. But windows 2000 doesn't work that well on my laptop being on mmx technology, so I formated again with windows98. I don't know how to get it to detect the card so i can get online....please help...ask some more questions of u need them to help me out...thanks....

Howdy and welcome to CTH:
Okay... you told us a pile of stuff here " Xicom Realport Ethernet 10/100+modem 56 REM56G"
So, which is your network card and which is your dial-up modem? Or do you have a dial up modem in which case what are you referring to ?

thanks for the reply....I have found the driver and the ethernet card works and i can getr on line with my cable line....but now i have another problem...my internet explorer is having errors on almost every page and says it's perfoming an illegal action and it closes..what is the cause of this....is just this just an outdated and doesn't work anymore...i tried to go to the microsoft internet explorer website to download updates....but my IE has problems with scripts and syntax errors and the page rarely is able to load at all...or if it does load it barely loads, leaving out many words and images...is there a way of solving this problem other than using windows 2000....should i just toss this notebook to the graveyard?....it is from 1998...The reason i ask if there is another way than using windows is cause than when i do format the notebook with 2000 it runs kinda slow cause it's an old notebook.. please reply...thanks
I have a sony vaio 200mhz MMX Technology, 2.0 GB HD, 128 MB ram...

When you re-formatted to install Win98, did you fdisk first to clean everything out completely?

Well, one must go into fdisk to delete partitions.
Guess the best way would be, did you boot using a Win98 bott floppy and then, once you got to a:> prompt, type in fdisk. From there did you use the option to remove all partitions?
After all partitions were removed, did you use the option to make a new Primary DOS partition and then format that partition and install Windows?

You will need to try and repair IE, but first try this:
Go to START | RUN
Type in
sfc (hit<ok>)
It will run a repair of your system files and may ask for the Win 98 CD (Use the recovery one).
If that does not fix it then try this:
Start| Settings| Control Panel
Go to Add/Remove Programs
See if Internet Explorer is listed, if so highlight and hit the Remove Button, you should then get an option to do a Repair.
