what do I need to do now

I now have the crossover cable to link my desktop to my laptop. What do I need to do now? What command do I need to use to get information off my desktop to my laptop . Do I need to download anything for each of the computer. Please keep it simple and basic since I do not know much about computer Please tell me anything else I need to know about.
