Hey I have a really old Mac it's MAC OSX 10.1 nothing runs on it so I'm trying to update it but it's not working

I downloaded 10.1.1 and transferred it with a USB pen to the mac but I get up to the set up where it tells me to 'select a destination' and the options are greyed out so I have no option but to 'Go back'.

How can I upgrade my Mac? anyone know?

Are you certain it has OS10.1.0 on it and not 10.1.2 or something?

Well I can think of 2 reasons why the disks would be greyed out.

1) You are attempting to install a version that is older than the currently installed version.

2) You need to boot from an install CD in order to install the OS update - you can't upgrade from a USB pen drive.

3) You may need to install this first: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/installerupdate.html

In any event I would forget about the 10.1.1 update and use the 10.1.5 combo update (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcomboupdate_10_1_5.html) or just go straight to 10.3 or 10.4 but you'd need to purchase 10.3 or 10.4.

10.1 (any version) is really a bad OS, full of bugs and problems. It was essentially a late beta release from Apple.

If the laptop supports 10.1 then it should support any version of OSX. You should not need a new laptop, but you may need more RAM or a bigger hard drive.

oh can i not download the update of 10.3 or 10.4 from the apple website? I tried to download 10.1.5 and something came up after I mounted the setup it said I needed 'Installer Update' but I tried to download this but the destinations were greyed out -_-

I'm trying to get a more updated version so I can get the internet on it

No you can not download 10.3 or 10.4, you have to pay for those.

I linked to the installer update above. (#3)

Heres a screenie (http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8052/picture018fx7.jpg) I've managed to take a photo of what I mean, this happens when I try to install 10.1 installer update and 10.1.2 upgrade.

Did you click on your hard drive?

The reasons for a non-selectable destination are posted above.

Oh yes I did try to click on it but didn't work. OH okies I think I need a new mac this may be broken.

I doubt it's broken.

The first step would be to boot from an OS install CD/DVD and see if that allow you to select a drive.

The problem you are having is with an updater, not the hardware. If you toss the Mac you'd be wasting money. Absolute WORSE case scenario is you need to back everything up and reinstall the operating system.

I don't know what you mean by a "Normal one".

To get an OS install CD you have to buy one. You can generally purchase them from the apple.com store or any Apple retailer.

I was having this problem earlier this week. OS X 10.1 requires an install drive of 8GB or less. The drive I was installing on was 9.4GB. I had to use the Disk Utility on the install CD to initialize the drive...one partition to 7.5GB (don't use exactly 8...the format software adds a bit of info to the drive, which will make it slightly over 8GB...thus preventing the install), the other using the remainder. As far as I can tell, only the partition you install the OS to has to be <8GB...the other partition can be whatever size you need.

As for the upgrade, I believe the higest is 10.1.5, plus some security patches. You have to buy 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 (and install them) separatly from 10.1.

Good luck ;)
