Since yesterday I have not been able to access the internet on my desktop. It works OK with my laptop though. MY OS is 98SE on the PC and XP on the laptop.
Someone said that the network card is the cause. Is there some test that I can run to find out exactly what's causing the problem? If it is the card, is there any way I can pull it out and replace it myself? Do I need to post details of items on my PC? Thanks for any advice.

you can look at the back of your computer and see if theres a light on your network card? also does it show connected on your router?

I don't think there ever was a light at the rear of the computer. There isn't one now. Also I don't have a router. I used the laptop rarely for internet (now I have to use it all the time since the PC is on the blink). When I did need it,I just used to switch the modem cable from the PC to laptop.

I get the standard error message "page cannot be found" etc.
I have broadband and usually on the modem, there re four green lights and an orange light when everything is working normally. When I try the PC the orange light does not work.

Are you sure that "Work Offline" isnt checked (If you use an IE BASED browser)
Otherwise you might wanna try restoring your registry from 2 days ago (Before this started) and see what happens then (Might help)
1) Bootup and press F8 until a menu comes up.
2) Select option 5 (Command Prompt)
3) Type this @ the prompt: scanreg/restore
4) Pick an entry from when things were working.
Good luck!

I restored the registry and it just brought back the orange light. My ISP helper made me go through some tests and told me that my ethernet adapter driver is corrupted. He temporarily fixed me up thorugh their installation CD.
Is there someplace where I can download a driver for my VIA VT 6102 RHINE II Fast ethernet adapter? Thanks for your help,

Thanks. I did downoad the file from the only location (the third one that says link OK) but the file is inoperative. The unzipped file just comes up as garbled text.

Hmm
I just tried it,it unzips as a PKG file...... I dunno how to extract that (Does anyone else?)
EDIT:
I changed the extention to .dll and it appears to be a DLL file..... (I dunno if it will work for you though, you can try that and see if it works as it should.)
