Trouble Dialing up one ISP but not another
I have a new/old laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 480CDT) and I can't seem to access my ISP. I have been able to access another dial-up ISP, so the modem seems to be alright, as does the phone line. (Though even getting that other dial-up ISP often doesn't connect until I've tried several times.) I get the error 629 every time I try to dial up my Tiscali ISP, and have researched and tried all suggestions regarding that error code, but nothing gets me through! (I've spent much much money talking to the good folks at Tiscali, but they are stumped as well.)
By the way, I can easily dial-up my Tiscali ISP on my desktop, as well as another laptop of my flatmate's, so if the problem lies in this particular laptop, why can I dial-up another ISP, even with some difficulty? Doesn't this still mean that my TCP/IP settings are working? Or can they be corrupted in some way? When trying to dial-up my Tiscali ISP, I only get the beginning of a dial-up/fax sound before it goes into a high whine and then eventually that 628 error. But again, why can I dial-up another ISP and not my Tiscali??? (And yes, I've checked that all the ISP dial-up info is correct and have tried making new connections several times, but still no luck.) Big Mystery and would love any suggestions you might have. I do have a WIN98SE disc, so if you need to talk me through some kind of removing/installing of a program, I could probably follow it, with your help. Thank you! -Ellen |

Thanks, but I've been there and tried that. I have since found that certain numbers can be dialed up, with what sounds like some difficulty, but others can not. What would cause me to only be able to dial up some numbers and not others? A faulty modem card? Hardware problem? (As I said, my phone connection has been checked twice and found to be fine.)
Any other thoughts? |

If it is error 629 and not 628? Then it is what is called a:
DUNS ERROR 629 = The port was disconnected by the remote machine Make sure the username and password you have entered for the DUNS connection is correct. Also make sure the phone number is correct. Remember that passwords are case sensitive, and since what you enter appears as ****, it's easy to enter an incorrect password. Depending upon your browser, mail, and other net-aware apps, a dial-up networking connection can be initiated by various programs - some of which may have their own settings for what Duns connection to use, username and password. Make sure the username, password, and connected to use are correct in each of the programs you use to start a connection. (In particular, Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Internet Connection Wizard, Outlook Express, Outlook, etc. all have options to automatically start a DUNS connection.) Try dialing in to the server with Hyperterminal connected directly to modem. Using Hyperterminal Nearly all servers will respond after CONNECT with a login prompt for your user name, and then password. This will allow you to see any error response from the server. If the server accepts your username and password, it should start a PPP session, and you cannot use Hyperterminal to get any further - you may see 'garbage' characters. If this happens, the username and password combination should work with DUNs. If you get an error, contact your service provider and have them try and log in with your account information. With Windows98 2nd edition if you are establishing a 128-bit encryption session under certain circumstances. See MS KB Article Q237419

Sorry. yes it was indeed a 629 error and I went to Microsoft to follow their suggestions. Some were a bit drastic for someone like me who isn't all that knowledgeable about computers (pulling out system files and such).
I will try to follow your suggestions, though I can't understand why I should be able to dial-up (with some difficulty) some numbers and not others. (Here in the UK, there are two National numbers, 0845 and 0844 which are pretty much exactly the same. My laptop could access the 0844 but NOT the 0845 (These are both used for pay-as-you-go dial-ups here and I added several new connections to differerent companies to check which ones I could access). And as I said, the number I dial to access my ISP, which is a freephone number, also couldn't be accessed. So why can the modem get to the 0844 but not the 0845 number, nor my ISP? It just seems that all the info I've put in is correct (and believe me, I've checked and rechecked to make sure they are exactly correct) but that the modem card might be faulty. Am I really on a wrong track on this? But I will try the whole hyperterminal suggestion if I can follow it, thanks. -Ellen |

I'd like to thank you for your suggestions, but at this point, I'm having to give it up. I took the laptop back to my tech guy and it worked perfectly for him at his shop. Everything was fine, with no problems dialing up my ISP or anything else... and when I brought it home, I could NOT dial up anything other than my own cell phone! No technician can find an answer (the fine folks at my phone company along with their internet experts just started laughing when I described everything I've tried.)
So this will remain one of those Tech Mysteries. (My computer guy has offered to refund me the price of the laptop. He's too frustrated to want to spend any more time to help me solve this, and I can't say I blame him.) Cheers! Ellen |
