Hi All:

I`m having a really rough time getting a new hard drive to be recognized by my Presario 7598. I know it is ancient but I want something not too fancy that I can run 98SE from. I will have to first install 95A as the 98 is an upgrade disk. The problem I have is that when I hook up a new drive to the machine it says there is no operating system installed when I know this is not the case. 98SE lives on the drive. I get the splash screen "Compaq" then the no operating system message. When I put the old drive in I get the opportunity to boot "F1" or enter BIOS "F10" and then I am warned of "imminent hard drive failure" so I know the motherboard is doing a little thinking here...maybe too much in my opinion. The BIOS recognizes any old hard drive I hook up and yet when I try to get the OS to take over Compaq tells me I don`t have an operating system. I even pondered throwing away the motherboard thinking the motherboard only likes Compaq-ized hard drives but found out that might be a hard task to take on to get a non DEll/Compaq etc. board....just a plain atx micro socket 370. Has anyone had experience installing a hard drive and putting his/her own operating system on a Compaq? I`m beginning to think my machine is better under my pickup tire than on my desk. Help???!!!.............Plain

plain, I said not to create a new one. I moved your other one from hardware. So I'm going to close this one and leave a link to the other one.
