Hi All, does anyone know how to enter Bios on compaq presario 5800 desktop. I have tried everything I can, reset button, all f buttons, etc. nothing works, the Compaq screen remains and it boots into 98se. I want to do a dual boot 98/linux

When you restart your computer, keep pressing F8 when you see the COMPAQ logo.
You should go directly into Bio. :happy:
Don't break anything once you get inside :D

Thanks Complex, I tried it again, but it still boots to 98se. I have tried a lot of combos, but nothing so far works. Thanks again. Freykatt

Thats weird. I just tried it on my compaq (5240) and it worked :confused:
Ah................
When you restarted the Computer did you see "Keyboard Error" when you kept pressing F8?
When kept pressing F8, did you continue to do so when the Windows 98 splash screen began?

Well, I tried it again, twice, repeatedly and by holding down f8, got a keyboard error , but have never when booting up gotten a 98 splash screen, just a Compact logo till it has displayed the Windows 98 background. Thanks again Complex, I've never had a compaq before, so was unfamiliar, no problem with plain ole puutors.

Welcome to CTH.
You're sure it's a 5800 and not a 58xx with the last two numbers not 00? I don't see 5800 here. (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/swPfinder?query=Presario+5800&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en)

Thanks Murf, F10 it is. I thought that with all the combinations previously that I tried that. I really appreciate all you fine folks that jumped in here, I've not had such service before, great place to be. Once again, Thank you.
BTW, is there a way to eliminate the Compaq logo on bootup?

Welcome
You should see a setting in SETUP (BIOS) to disable it. Should be called Enable/Disable splash screen. If not then it is embedded, and there are some programs out there where you can disable. Not sure any of them are free though e.g., System Mechanic...

Thanks Murf, I looked, did not recognize any thing that referred or indicated anything to do with a splash screen. Its not a big deal, but I would like to get rid of it, its kinda like sittin at the laundromat and watchin the drying tumble yur clothes, I would rather see the specs flashin by.

:D Good analogy...
OK been awhile since I worked on a Compaq but look at this file:
Some Compaqs the splash screen is controlled by a program called DFILTER.SYS. To stop it from loading, just REM out the line that loads it in your c:\config.sys file.
From your Start Menu, choose Run. In the box type SYSEDIT and press the ENTER key. This will load the System Configuration Editor utility. Click on the "Config.sys" window to bring it to the front. Look for the line that loads DFILTER.SYS and put REM at the beginning. It should end up looking something like this:
REM DEVICE=C:\Compaq\Support\dfilter.sys
Save your changes and exit the program. Then shutdown and restart your computer. The Compaq splash screen should no longer appear.

Hi Murf, I followed your lead, but was unable to find anything "Dfilter.sys"
DEVICE himem.sys
DEVICE EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS HIGHUMBAUTO
FILESHIGH =80
BUFFERHIGH= 40,4
DEVIDEHIGH C:/windows\system\cpqidecd.sys/D:idecd001
SET BOTD=c:
SHELL=c:\COMMAND.COM/P/E:2048

Huuum, Like you I hate those logo screens.....
It must be embedded in the BIOS and not configurable, as it is not a Windows file so it is loaded prior to windows loading.
When you were in SETUP did you by chance see an entry maybe called "Silent Mode" if so disable it. Otherwise I'm out of suggestions....
