Had virus, removed,more problems,complete restore

I had the sircam32 worm virus, I removed it, but was still having problems, so I did a complete restore, and am still having the same problems. The computer freezes up at any time and any place for no reason, sometimes when I turn on the power, the computer won't come up, so I must shut it back off again. Even since I did the restore, I'm still getting error messages,

I don't have a clue in the world, and I need help! Please!?!?!

Ya might want to restart F8/Dos prompt only Scandisk & then "YES" to thorough scan. Repair errors "YES". Then reboot normal. Run SFC in windows to replace damaged system files.

Spider- I had used the Symantec removal tool before I did the restore. Should I use it again? I ran the Scan Disk in MS-DOS like Rancher suggested, found no problems! I don't know what he is talking about with the other thing "run SFC" ? I'm not very good with this computer thing, let me know please, I'm ready to burn this computer!

Start(button)
Run...
type sfc and hit enter
System File Checker will already be selected on
Scan for altered files
...get your WindowsXX CD ready.

After that, open Internet Explorer and in the menu...
Tools
Windows Update

This takes you to Microsoft. You can trust them. On the
web page that opens click on
PRODUCT UPDATES

You might be prompted to install something....say OK or YES to
the "trust" and follow instructions. Your version of Windows will
be analyzed and Microsoft will know exactly what you have and
what you don't have. S'matter of fact, it will give you a nice list of
things you don't have and those will be ready for downloading(getting).

First thing you want to do is to download any
Critical Updates And Service Packs that are showing.
It's the first category in the list because it's the most important.
The little box to the left will already be checked. A check means
I want to get this. Every time there are issues with bugs,
security problems, or any recently discovered Internet security
issues, Microsoft makes these critical updates available to
prevent any of these bad things happening to you.

Okay, I ran sfc, and had all zeros on completion I don't have a windows 98 disk because it came pre-installed on my compaq presario 7470 computer. I have a floppy labeled windows start up disk. I'm going now to download the things from microsoft, I actually did this before I did the restore yesterday, I realize I wiped it all clean, and I need to do it again, but I did do it before, I don't think I'm getting anywhere here! Any more suggestions? It is getting harder and harder to turn the power on. Sometimes I must turn it back off two or three times before it will come up.

Tami,

Here's the story.

Your 7470 ships with a paper in the box claiming that new technology
eliminates the need for a restore disk. Compaq's usually ship with a
restore CD and an operating system CD(WindowsXX). The 7470 does
not come with CDs.

Your at a state with your computer where you need to format(wipe out
everything) and do a fresh install of Windows98. Without a Windows98
CD, and a serial number to go with it, there is nothing you can do.

The virus was probably halted on your computer but alas too much damage
has been done and there is so many corrupted files that it's impossible
to keep that Windows98 from working properly again.

You have to phone Compaq and request the two CDs so you can rebuild
your computer.

I wish I had better news but that's all there is.

As an extra note:

It's ludicrous for anyone to think one does not have to have a WindowsXX
CD with a computer running WindowsXX. Any tech knows that your
dead-in-the-water without one. It's not the kind of CD that you keep
using every week, but when the time arrives when you have to have it
then possessing it becomes very important.

For you it was a malicious virus attack. Some people get corrupted
operating systems for other reasons...regardless, when WindowsXX
is broken then a format and reinstall is the only cure.

All of the moderators here and many of the members have all lost
systems to viruses and broken WindowsXX. Sometimes it takes
a severe tragedy to make us wary in the future. There are some
good things that can be learned from this unfortunate incident.
[*]First off, email attachments are not to be clicked on. Unless your
expecting an email from someone (that you know for a fact they have
sent something attached to the email) then the email should be deleted
and any attachments to it are never to be clicked on...never, and there
are no exceptions.
[*]Any computer purchase must come with a CD that has the same
operating system that is installed on the computer. You need the
CD and a serial number to go with it. If a CD or serial number is said
to not be included then do not purchase the machine...no exceptions.
[*]Any computer that is going to be plugged in and turned on must
have a virus checker program. There are no exceptions.

If you run by those rules then you will never be in a position of having
a computer, but not being able to use it. Even if the computer develops
other problems then all of the tools are "in-hand" to allow someone
more qualified to recover the system.

Spider- I just wanted to let you know that after all we did, the mother board was gone in my computer. I took it to someone to work on it, and he said the virus didn't cause the mother board to go out, it was just a coincidence that it happened at the same time! Lucky me! He said with that computer model, he couldn't replace the mother board, and I said fine, just keep the thing, and got me a Dell! I just wanted to let you know what finally happened, and to thank you so very much for your effort and help. I was at such a loss, and you were there for me. Thanks again you are the greatest in my book! Tami

Hey, your very welcome.

Your going to like the Dell system. Their support is unparalleled in my opinion.
