Lock up during install

After having Vista destroy my computer. I have had to go back and start all over. I bought a new hard drive and I need some help. Usually I can handle this part on my own... but I have run into a few speed bumps.

1.) I need a hard drive partioning program for my 500GB Western Digital SATA hard drive... Before i used maxblast, however it is an older version and not compatible with the large hard drive size.

2.) The computer keeps locking up while installing windows 98... I am doing this because I only have an upgrade to windows XP and 98 is the only thing I have a full version of.

any help would be greatly appreciated...

An upgrade XP can do a clean install even though it's an upgrade disk. All you need is the win98 cd to put in the computer when it asks for it, to show you have previous operating system. Is your xp upgrade have SP2 on it? And do you have drivers for your SATA ports on the motherboard? Or is it new enough they are not needed?

Follow the instructions in the Microsoft article to do a clean install using an upgrade cd. Scroll down this page to the heading "Installing XP on a new hard disk."

Note located on this website:

Note If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system to verify upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating system into the CD-ROM drive. You can use the CD-ROM to upgrade from the following versions of Windows:
Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional
