I have an HP Vectra computer with windows 98SE. When I install a PCTel
modem, it installs itself on Com5 and when queried, gives "can't open port".
Device Manager says it has no conflicts. I can't seem to get it to install
on any other port, even if I uninstall it, add more Com ports (Com 3,4, and
6) and then reinstall. It still goes to Com 5 and can't open port.

If I install WMe on this very same computer, it recognizes the modem and
installs it on Com 4, where it responds normally to Modem Query.

How do I get it installed correctly in W98SE?

Welcome to CTH

Does that modem have jumpers on it? If not get into SETUP (1st screen tells you which key to use), in SETUP disable the com ports (leave Com 1 if using a serial mouse.).

Then try installing, also while in there duable Plug&Play if enabled.

Save and Exit....

Thanks, Murf. I have the serial ports disabled in the BIOS, but had PnP enabled. Unfortunately disabling it didn't change things. If I delete the modem, shut down and restart, W98SE still automatically recognizes it and reinstalls it to Com 5. From some PCTel site I have learned it has to be on a com port between 1 and 4.

So if I remove it in the Control Panel/Modem and then Add a modem using the same Control Panel/Modem, I can force the modem to be installed on Com 2, but then OS recognizes it again and installs a second copy at Com 5. Neither one can open its port. If I "remove" the Com 5 "modem", the remaining modem on Com 2 still can't open port.

Windows Me has no problem with any of this and automatically installs on Com 4 and opens the port. Unfortunately the license is W98SE.

Did you do a search for a driver?

I have run into this. Most PCTel modems are what is called a winmodem (Software). Try installing com ports 1 thru 4, thru Add/Remove Hardware (or if Com 1 & 2 are already there then add Com 3 & 4. The physically install modem. Has worked for me before.

Thanks for the help folks. You all finally inspored me to look again for drivers.
One from a batch of three installed on Com 3 and worked just fine.
