Word 2000 problem PLEASE help

Hi, I know so little about computers that I may even be posting this in the wrong section - apologies if I am...

I have been busy working on an assignment for a while, and have been saving my word document on a memory pen with the file name "final assignment". I just opened the document and did about 2 hours work on it, making some big changes - I just went to hit a final save before I finished for the evening, and suddenly my document sort of froze, and I noticed that the name of the document had renamed to something bizzare - a temporary file name (WR and numbers or something similar?!), and then I clicked on this box and my document vanished.....

.... and now it is knowhere to be found - not on my pen, not anywhere - not even the original SAVED document that I had been working on for a few weeks.

Is there anyone out there for whom this rings any bells, and who might know if I have a single hope of recovering this document - at least to the point of the last successful save - or to the point it was at 2 hours ago when I started working on it?? Is there a chance that my computer could've just erased it?

Here's hoping this makes sense to SOMEONE....

Hi panic_striken and welcome to CTH. You might be able to find your document in the Word temp files. See here (http://www.amset.info/tips/office-recovery.asp) for more help.

Thanks for taking the trouble to find me a link - however my temporary file has vanished - there is no trace of the document I once had, so I think I have to acept a loss on this one! I just can't believe it removed a document I had saved weeks ago!

Are you sure? What operating system do you have?

It's windows XP (if that's what you mean - as you can see, my knowledge is VERY limited!)

Yes, that's what I meant panic_striken. :)

No guarantees but try this:

go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and click ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

dir /s /a "c:\final*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread. Now do the same for the below strings and copy and paste that information here too.

dir /s /a "c:\*.wbk" > c:\find1.txt & start notepad c:\find1.txt

dir /s /a "c:\*.tmp" > c:\find2.txt & start notepad c:\find2.txt

It looks like the last time Word created temp files was on 24th May. Make sure that you can view hidden files and folders (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html) and open My Computer. Navigate to the below directories and check out all of the below files:

No problem, you have made sure that you can view hidden files and folders right?

Open My Computer and doubleclick on local disk (C: ). Now look for the next directory. It's Documents and Settings so doubleclick on that. Now look for Sam & Astrid and doubleclick on that and so on. Just follow the path's I have posted (the path is just the next directory in the string) until you find the files. When you find them doubleclick on them to open them.

I have made sure I can view all files and folders as explained, and I've tried to follow the file paths, but when I get to the file "application data" it is shaded and I can't click on it at all - and when I try it all freezes. SOme of the files (that one included) are lighter in colour, like I can't access it...

Bear in mind that the only files that might be recoverable were created on 24th May panic_striken. I dont want to send you on a "wild goose chase" so if your files were created after that date there is no point in pursuing this option any further.

I got to open them, but sadly that wasn't it - although it was someting I lost a little while ago, so wasn't a wasted effort!

Thanks so much for trying though - I'm sure if you were sitting at my PC it would be easier - rather than trying to direct somebody on the other side of the world who only just knows a keyboard from a mouse!!

Aww, sorry to hear that panic_striken. :( Because no temp files were created by Word after 24th May, if I were you, I would uninstall it and reinstall it before I started again in case it has corrupted.
