Your pc shop is correct. Nothing short of unplugging everything from the outlet and your internat cabling from the computer will stop a lightning bolt should it hit your house or anywhere near your house. The only thing a surge protector does is protect against dirty electric or surges (brown outs), but lightning is something no battery backup or surge protector can protect you against. Battery backups are only useful for keeping your computer up and running long enough for you to save any work you're doing at the time of a power outage. It too will not stop a bolt of lightning.
