Is there any freeware for checking to see if any of my hardware is failing, even an alternative to SpinRite.

Most every hard drive mfg. has their own utility - free - to check drives.

Yes, drive manufacturers should provide drive checking tools for free. Or anything with SMART will do it (many of these manufacturer tools are just SMART readers anyway).
Memtest86+ will check RAM. DirectX Diagnostics (Start->Run->dxdiag) has a few checks for the DX capabilities of your GPU. OpenGL Extensions Viewer (http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/) can do a similar thing for OpenGL ability. 3DMark will stress test, you'll be able to notice any errors by eye.
AIDA32 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html) can diagnose a bunch of stuff.

Sounds like it could be a good tester,
Thanks! Oracle 128
and thank you to others that helped
with this system checking stuff!
When I get a chance I'll try it out!
