Hi, I really need help. I am totally lost and confused. My dad bought an acer laptop which has Vista on it. We want xp on the laptop and I have an xp cd ready to be installed and it won't let me install saying it is not compatable with Vista.

Can someone please tell me step by step how to get xp on this computer and not have vista. Thank you so much
Linda

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

I moved your post from the thread you hijacked and started your own.

Now, is your XP cd retail, a Recovery/Restore cd from Dell, HP, etc or one you or someone downloaded from the net for you?

I think it is oem, a friend of mine gave it to me years ago and it was never used, so yup I would say retail.

Does the OEM cd say anything on it?

Is you BIOS (setup) set to boot from the cd drive first?

No I don't see anything on the oem. I believe the bios is set to boot from the cd drive first though.

If you need my email is Dolphingirl19403@comcast.net

I am not sure how much I can check the forum this week, my Aunt passed away today so if you would be able to even email me how to do this that would be great but if not I will check back on this as much as I can.

Put the XP cd into the cd drive. Now, boot the system.

Do you see a screen that says something like "Press any key to boot from cd" ?

No I don't see anything on the oem.

There has to be something on it or is it a burned copy?

Ok when i put the cd in it first says run setup.exe. After it says install windows xp and when I do so it says the program is blocked due to compatibility issues. It says setup can not be continued because the version of windows is newer than what I want to install.

But it says warning if you decide to delete the newer version of windows that is currently on your computer the files and settings cannot be recovered. I knew that.

Are you in Windows when you are doing this?

I believe I am in windows. All I know is I turn on the computer and then put in the xp cd and that is what happens. Also quick question, someone told me to purchase a partition cd install that and then xp would work is that true?

You already have that with your XP cd.

When you boot the computer, is the XP cd in the drive? It MUST be.

Are you getting a screen that says "Press any key to boot from the cd"? If you aren't, then you have to go into BIOS (setup) and change the boot setup to allow the cd drive to be the first boot device.

So when I turn the computer on I should have xp in the computer already?

So if I have to change the boot setup how do I do this step by step.

As the computer boots up, watch for a screen displaying a line about pressing a key on the keyboard to enter "Setup." When you see that screen with that line, press the key it indicates. If it flashes by too fast, reboot and try again.

If you don't see such a screen with a line about getting into Setup, common keys for Acers are F1, F2 and the CTRL+ALT+ESC key combination.
