Something strange has happened. i am running the internet on another computer in another room from a router. The internet on the main computer runs fine but the internet on the other computer doesnt work.
i used to always have the MTU set to 1500 and it worked great, got home one day and there was nothing. i unplugged the modem and router and then plugged it back in and it reset to default MTU (1400) and websites would run but for me to access certain things such as hotmail and msn i need the mtu at 1500

what can i do to fix this?
any ideas?
Thanks
Dan

First of all... you only "need" your MTU to be greater than say 60 if you actually want to transmit anything. There is no application on the planet that is actually aware of what the MTU is (that I am familiar with anyway, certainly Hotmail and MSN are guaranteed to not care). The IP protocol makes sure of that with segmentation.

With most ISPs, an MTU of 1500 is not allowed (cable and dsl). The most common MTU's set by ISPs are 1452, 1472, and 1492. You can try one of those, but it likely won't make a difference if you don't have access to certain services.

well i know for certain msn and hotmail only work on mtu 1500 and not on the default 1400. nothing ever worked on 1400, i changed it to 1500 and everything worked so perfectly.

I reiterate that your MTU being set to 1400 won't prevent your from using http services like hotmail or im protocols like MSN. There are some things that it can effect because of fragmentation, but it doesn't prevent access.

Now... "i unplugged the modem and router and then plugged it back in and it reset to default MTU (1400)" tells me that something happened to your router because routers store all of their settings in flash memory that does not get erased when you unplug it. Since your settings changed, something happened.
