access hard drive

i bought a network hard drive , it is conneted to a router. i can access the hard drive on my laptop with the Wifi, load files get files ect.. That is only when i am connected to my network through my router at home. Is there a way to access this hard drive through the internet? the desktop does not even have to be on to access my files from my laptop. SO please if someone has one working , please help . I would like to access my files on that hard drive form anywhere.

You have 2 options:

1.) VPN - depending on your router you might be able to flash a custom operating system to it that will support VPN access. I wouldn't recommend this though. Many networks block access to outside VPNs to protect their own resources and it can cause a significant security risk to your home network.

2.) FTP - Check your NAS and see if it supports an FTP server. If it does, enable it, set up a user name and password, and forward port 21 in your router to the device. You might want to set up a dynamic DNS host to point to your address so you don't have to memorize ip addresses too.

I'm assuming you plan to go with the ftp server. If not let me know.

First thing you need to do is check if your NAS has an FTP server built in (most do). If you can't find it, just post your model here and I'll look it up.

harddrive

This is a Linksys Network Storage Drive, Model # NSLU2, mac Address is LKG7E9B80. I have insstalled the disk and the install utillity but still unable understand how to access the files from the net. It is connected thruough my router which is the Dlink DSL-604+ from Telus.

I'm not positive that your device has an FTP server. The user manual doesn't reference it, but some people have said that it is in the latest firmware.

Download the latest firmware from Here and install it. See if you can find an option after the upgrade to enable an ftp server.
