Network adapter wusb54gs 2.1- Help please.

Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter wusb54gs 2.1

I have plugged the adapter into my laptop and it recognizes that a device is there but the adapter doesn't seem to work. The power light doesn't flash on and it doesn't pick up the signal. It did work for months but just didn't one day. I thought it might be a problem with the adapter itself so got a new one but the same thing seems to happen.
Is there anything I can do about this? I can't think of what would cause it.

What do you mean by "it doesn't pick up the signal"?
