Hello,
I need help I have a windows vista and for some reason my MsPaint stopped working. When i click on it, a window pops up with the title: "mspaint.exe-Bad Image
C:\Windows\System32\odbcint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."
At this time I cannot remember whether the computer came with software or not but I will try to look for it...also I am currently looking for ways to uninstall this current mspaint but when i go to control panel, it does not appear on the list. if i cant uninstall it i cant download it so i was hoping if anyone knew how i could uninstall mspaint and if anyone could tell me what to do...
i really miss my paint.......please help, someone....

Hi moon_hiding and welcome to CTH. Mspaint is part of your Vista installation but the problem doesnt appear to be with that file.
Try this:
go to Start Search and type:
cmd.exe
Look for cmd.exe in the program list and open it. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.
dir /s /a "c:\odbcint*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt
Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

after typing the code and pressing enter this is what it said on the black window
access is denied

You could also try reinstalling odbcint.dll from here http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?odbcint, follow the install instructions

I downloaded it and then tried to open it but it came up with the same message about it not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error...

Can you try again please moon_hiding but we will do it a bit differently this time.
go to Start Search and type:
cmd.exe
Look for cmd.exe in the program list and open it.
When you follow the above instructions, does cmd.exe appear under Programs at the top of the Start Menu?
If so, rightclick on it and choose "Run as administrator".
Now copy and paste the below string (dont type it) after the prompt > and hit enter.
dir /s /a "c:\odbcint*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt
Wait for a minute or two, does Notepad open now?

Hi to all,
I am a newbie to this forum. I encountered the same problem which moon_hiding experienced. Googled and found this forum and this thread. Apologies for digging up an old thread but it seems like this problem did not have a proper closure in this thread.
I followed the instructions of AnnMarie and got the following output:
Volume in drive C is COMPAQ
Volume Serial Number is 9476-4632

Should I go on to try to reinstall odbcint.dll as advised by Peterm69 above?
Any further advice of forum members would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks "dammit" for pointing me to the PaintNET free download. (For a moment there, I thought you were scolding me, haha.)
I downloaded PaintNET and tried to install it but dammit, the same "odbcint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows..." error popped up, except that this time, it was titled "SetupFrontEnd.exe - Bad Image".

That's a Paint.NET file.
The problem seems to be odbcint.dll although you do have the correct version installed. Maybe it has corrupted.
Boot into Safe Mode (restart your computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts). Make sure that you can view hidden files and folders (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html), uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and navigate to the below directory:
c:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-m..c-drivermanager-rll_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_0d649155e d7f9a28
Look for odbcint.dll and when you find it, rightclick on it and choose "Copy". Now navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Open the System32 folder and find odbcint.dll. Rightclick on it and choose "Delete". Once deleted, click on a blank space in the folder, rightclick again and choose "Paste". A fresh copy of the file should now appear in the folder.
Restart your computer and try opening Paint now.

Thanks AnnMarie for the detailed instructions. I managed to get into safe mode but there seems to be no where I could set "view files and folders". May I know where I could do this?
What I did was this:
I chose "safe mode". (There were 2 other choices, one of which was "safe mode with networking". Can't remember the other one.) The windows files were then automatically loaded - a text list scrolled up the screen. After that I get usual Welcome screen for logging in. I logged in as "Admin".
Then from "Start Search", I got into cmd.exe by right-clicking it and choosing "run as administrator".
I navigated to both directories you mentioned and checked the file properties of the 2 odbcint.dll files. They both have exactly the same properties:
02/11/2006 05:42 PM 229,376 odbcint.dll
So I did not overwrite the file and just logged off from safe mode after that.
BTW, I am using Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit).
Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oops, I just saw the link you provided on how to show hidden files (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html). But I guess the result would have been the same since I already can see the files in DOS command by running it as administrator?

Yes but if you need to replace it, you need to see it in Windows.
I navigated to both directories you mentioned and checked the file properties of the 2 odbcint.dll files. They both have exactly the same properties:
Yes I know. From my earlier post you do have the correct version installed I can see that in the text file generated by the search. That doesnt mean that the file could not be corrupted though and the only way to find out is to replace it.
So I did not overwrite the file and just logged off from safe mode after that.
I dont want you to attempt to overwrite the file. If you want my help, please follow my instructions.
