I'm running Windows 98, and I had my modem properly installed and running. However my PC suddenly didn't recognize the driver, so I uninstalled the modem, and attempted a reinstall. Now Win 98 has it under USB Serial Bus Contollers/ unknown device. When I try to manually install the driver for the modem, it says that "This file has no information regarding this device" (paraphrase). I'm using a USB to connect obviously. I already contacted my ISP, and we did everthing we could think of. I even formatted my HD and did a clean install of 98. Is there anything you would know that I don't? When I do try to add it as a Network Adapter and point it to the correct driver, rundll32 has an illegal operation, any ideas on this one?
Thanks ya'll!

I tried that and same problem. Someone else said it sounded like the modem itself failed. Is that a possibility?
The Error Msg from the failed install is :RUNDLL32 caused a general protection fault
in module SETUPX.DLL at 0005:000052cb.

Hi
yes, it is possible it is malfunctioning.
thunderclaps can kill modems.

There hasn't been a thunderstorm here or anything like it since I got the modem, so how could that be?

It was a possibility.
a thunderclap can be quite far off and still send a spike on the lines.
It can happen while not at home so you never know.
Anyway, it is not sure that it is kaput.
If you have another computer nearby, you can try the modem on that one.

Sadly no PC nearby. What about the GPF Error?

Hi,
what brand and model is this USB modem?
I assume you already tried another USB port.
Do you have another USB peripheral? Can you try if that works on the port the modem uses?

Well I just tried it on another USB port (i only have 2) and same thing. The only other device I have is a jumpdrive, and it see's that it's there and what it is, but I need to d/l the drivers for it again. The USB modem is a Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2100.

I sure hope your ISP didn't suggest formatting the drive....Sure you lost a bunch of data and some programs.
Get back into SETUP and check the following:
Power Management - Disabled
IRQs Assigned - Auto
Plug and Play OS - Enabled (Disabling this option can cause IRQ Steering problems in Win98SE)
USB Keyboard - Enabled
Assign IRQ for USB - Disabled (Some systems require this feature to be Enabled)
If you made changes, SAVE & EXIT, same problem then check the following:
Resource Conflicts - Windows Device Manager / Resource Tab
Check each of the four boxes for conflicts
IRQs (USB does NOT like to share its IRQ with other devices)
DMA
I/O
Memory

Um yeah, actually they did. They said it sounded like "The pc didn't want to let go of a previous config, a clean install will wipe that out". And no, I didn't lose anything, I had put a second HD in this puter when it was given to me :D
BTW there was no info in setup for changing IRQ settings in regard to USB.
There is no resource tab in device manager

Sorry, been quite awhile since I have ran 98. In Device manager, scroll down to probably the last entry USB..
If you have 2 USB ports then you should have 4 USB entries of which one for each port will be "root"...what do you have???

Ok here is the deal, there are only 2 entries in the device manager... BUT when u go to the usb root, and click on power/power properties, it says two ports available.
BTW I was checking into my NDIS adapters, and I looked at the driver for the modem with notepad, and this is what I found
[AcmUsbCm9x.Reg]
HKR, Ndi, DeviceId, , "USB\VEN_069A&DEV_4501"
HKR, , DevLoader, 0, "*ndis"
HKR, , DeviceVxDs, 0, "Sacm2A.sys"
HKR, , EnumPropPages, 0, "netdi.dll, EnumPropPages"
HKR, NDIS, LogDriverName, 0, "Sacm2A"
HKR, NDIS, MajorNdisVersion, 1, 03
HKR, NDIS, MinorNdisVersion, 1, 0a
HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, DefUpper, 0, "ndis3"
HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, DefLower, 0, "ethernet"
HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, UpperRange, 0, "ndis3"
HKR, Ndi\Interfaces, LowerRange, 0, "ethernet"
NDIS3! My adaptors only show options for Enhanced mode NDIS (32bit and 16 bit) Adapters.
When I try to add an adapter in Network/Add.. one option for is "existing NDIS2 adapters" nothing for NDIS3
Could this be my problem and if so, how do I fix it?

Not a problem. I actually have a real job too lol. I need to go to bed myself. Sorry about all the run around with this thing, but it's driving me bonkers!
UPDATE!
You will not believe how simple it was! All I needed to do was RESET THE MODEM!!!
Now why didn't the WONDERFUL (ha ha) tech support at Time Warner suggest that????
I am so sorry you spent so long helping me with this. I really really want to thank you! The last article you sent me was the key, it suggested resetting the modem, and I said... ok I guess I'll try anything no matter how simple it sounds. Anyway, you are the king!
