Windows updater will not connect to Microsoft for updates and gives 80004002 error. Tried the suggested Lan automatic setting in Explorer, and it did not work, still have the error and will not connect. Also it shows13 updates ready to install when the computer is shut down, it tries to install them then the computer closes, When the computer is shut down again the updates are still there and again it tries to load them and closes. Any ideas? This is an issue on a good friends computer, and just trying to help.

Hi deacon2006. Can you try using System Restore to restore your OS to the state it was in before you last downloaded Windows Updates and try again please. The beginning of May would be good but you will have to reinstall any programs you have downloaded since then if you do this. Your data will be ok though.

Thanks for the speedy reply, my friends computer only had restore points for the month of June, although he bought the computer in March. He believes the problem started sometimes in mid May. Looks like you were right on but unfortunately the restore points don't go back far enough. Any other thoughts?

Try this. Go to Start Search and copy and paste the below commands in the order posted and hit enter after each line.

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wuweb.dll

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 atl.dll

regsvr32 softpub.dll

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

net start wuauserv

Reboot and try Windows Updates again. Let us know if this helped.

Some of those commands may have needed to be run as Administrator and one file doesnt exist on Vista. Sorry about that deacon2006.

Ok, let's try something else. If he hasnt been able to update since May, he will not have the latest version of the Windows Update Agent installed.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to the Desktop but dont do anything with it yet. See download links below.

For x86(32 bit) Windows:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

For x64 (64 bit) Windows:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

Close IE and any open programs and then follow the instructions here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749). To access the command prompt in Vista, type cmd.exe in Start Search. You will see it appear at the top of the Menu. Instead of opening it, rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Type the below commands on the Microsoft page now.

2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.

Next, install the Windows Update Agent and reboot. Try Windows Updates now and let us know if this helped.

Success, with one hitch, followed your instructions to the letter and after we rebooted and opened the updater it still showed in red indicating an error. My friend ask me to try it anyway, I selected "check for updates" and away it went and found 15 downloads needing to be installed, downloaded and installed them.

AnnMarie, we want to thank you for all the help, I want to get a subscription and $5 is extrememly cheap, but I will not use Pay Pal can someone use my E-mail and send me an address so I can send payment by Mail?

Deacon thank you for your offer to subscribe. I'm afraid that CTH can take no other payment methods than Paypal currently although other methods are being looked into.

Sorry I haven't checked lately (haven't had any problems) be sure that when you completed all the listed stuff, it may show the red error. Try selecting the update button again just to make sure that it didn't work. I will retreive all the paperwork I had on the error, I was helping a friend and left the information. I will update this information as soon as I check if there is an answer not shown here. May God bless.
