View Full Version : HELP - Connecting the 'shareddocs' folder from XP laptop to Vista PC

Recently I upgraded the home pc (Hpc) to Vista (Home Premium 2006). I also have a laptop (lap) at home that runs XP (ver. 2002 SP2)

I have these 2 networked through a wireless router, the router is connected to the Hpc. There are no problems with connecting to the internet on both Hpc and lap. I can see and access all (except one) of the shared folders that I am sharing between the Hpc and lap.

However, the ‘shareddocs’ folder of lap cannot be access by the Hpc (Vista). This is where I’m stuck and have been for a couple of days trying to figure it out. Hoping you guys can help out with this!!

The message is:
\\xxx\shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this service to find out if you have access permission.
Access denied.

Both the Hpc and lap are single user logins (no password required and no other users have been setup). This should mean that every time I turn on the Hpc and lap I should be the administrator… right?

Hope you guys can help out, this is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance.

Ben

The reason for this is that by default the ntfs permissions on the shared documents folder does not allow anonymous network access.

You can change this, but it may present a security risk so do it "at your own risk".

Open My Computer. Click Tools -> Folder options. Click on the view tab the scroll down to the bottom and uncheck "use simple file sharing" and click ok. Right Click on the "Shared Documents" folder and click properties. Go to the Security Tab. Click add. In the user name box type "Everyone" and click ok. At this point it would be a good idea to highlight the Everyone user and edit their permissions in the window below. Read & Execute, List, and Read would be the only permissions I would allow. Next click on the sharing tab. Click on the permissions button. If everyone is not listed do the same as above for the security permissions. Click ok and you should be able to remotely access the shared documents.

... "at your own risk".
Thanks for the reply Archangel.
Argh.. What do you mean?!! Will the 'shareddocs' be exposed, I mean more exposed? Will the other shared folders be as safe as if I didn't change anything?

... "use simple file sharing" and click ok. Right Click on the "Shared Documents" folder and ...
I can't see the "use simple file sharing" in Views of the Folder Options, it doesn't have that as an option (to check or uncheck it). This is the XP I should be looking into right?

To answer your first, the only reason it is "at your own risk" is because you would be editing folder and share permissions directly which can cause security holes if you don't know what your are doing/aren't careful.

It would seem you have windows XP home edition which doesn't have the direct ability to modify NTFS or share permissions. You can do all of the above from same mode if you care to.
