View Full Version : WEP preventing DHCP?

OS - XPSP2.

I have a wireless modem/router hard wired to a pc. It assigns the pc an IP address by DHCP - 192.168.0.2

WEP is enabled and the wireless laptop has the correct WEP code entered as it connects to the router fine.

HOWEVER - it cannot get an IP address from the router, it is constantly 'acquiring network address', and ends up with the windows assigned .254 IP which indicates no connectivity.

It is definitely set to acquire an IP address automatically, not set to a static IP.

As soon as WEP is turned off, DHCP works and the laptop can get onto the net.

Any pointers anyone? I have seen this problem twice recently with similar laptops.

It actually sounds like you don't have the correct key entered. With WEP or WPA you can always connect to the router, but that is as far as you can get without the correct key.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty sure it is the correct key. I re-entered it to make sure at the time.

I've had a Google and come across a suggestion that the adapter may not be capable of handling 128bit WEP, which would figure as it's an older laptop and adapter.

I'll post back how I progress with it.

That may be. Have you checked for new drivers for the network card?
BTW - WHat do you have for a network card?

I haven't yet, no. I will be returning to the problem (not mine personally) soon and will post my findings.

Thanks for the input so far.
