static ip question

Hello. I am trying to set up a static ip address on my system. Where do I find the DHCP info?
I need to set up a dvr with a static ip that is connected to surveillance cameras at a bar. I am trying to set up an address at home first and am wondering if there are any good tutorials available. Thank you.
PS - Stupidest question yet - do I have to have a static ip address from my provider first? I've tried to set it up on my own using the protocols found on the forums - without luck. I have found out all the relevant info on my router and system by following some of the links listed in other threads. thanks for all the help.

You may need to get a static IP from your ISP. It all depends what you are trying to do?

Are you trying to access or send info to the DVR over the internet? If so you need a static IP from your ISP or need to set up something like DDNS (see http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ for one of the free services out there). (try googling 'free DDNS' for more)

If you setup DDNS, then you would refer to the DVR by name and if your IP from your ISP changed, it wouldn't matter, the DDNS client would update the IP address for the name automatically.

If you are running a router of some kind you'll most likely have to set up port forwarding so that you can get to the DVR. In that case you may want a static IP address on the DVR itself so that you can set the router to forward to it.
