wireless card for my laptop

i have a gatway solo 5300 and i wanted a wireless 802.11g card for it, but all the wireless cards i find have 2 little round connectors on them that my laptop does not have i have a wire connectors one has 2 wires to it and the other has maybe 10, but neither of them are those little round looking ones. (then again they could just be trim pots? maybe not even connectors at all)

look at the bigger picture below that first one on that link and you will see the 2 little round things i am talking about (top right hand corner)

the network card i pulled out is this one and you can see the 2 flat connectors in the top left hand corner i am talking about on it.

The two connectors are for an internal antenna. If you don't have these connectors somewhere near the mini PCI slot you do not have an internal antenna and you can not use the mini PCI adapter.

I suggest you get a PCMCIA (aka PC Card) wireless adapter which has a built in antenna.

is there any pcmcia that does not have a big blob hanging out of the slot, maybe something more of a mini antenna or something like that or are they all like that? the reason i was going for the mini pci is because its internal and does not stick out the side.

Unfortunately, the only PCMCIA cards I know of have the antenna hanging out of the port.

while i am going to go with usb 802.11g they are pretty small and hopefully the usb dongle could be small enought to fit where the mini pci slot is and i could wire it directly to my usb port so nothing stick out of my laptop (you know not to get sheered of by regular use) the same reason i as looking for mini pci compaired to pcmcia.


also if the use card is usb 2.0 and i only have a usb 1.0 slot will the 802.11g connection be slower since usb 1.0 is slower than 2.0?

i also wonder if i could connect this wireless mouse to the same usb port that i am going to hardwire the 802.11g card to, it would i have to have a hub? i am sure they have small hubs that could fit in my mini pci slot (not the slot itself just the space inside the laptop where the card would go.

i bet i could fit those 3 things inside the pcmcia ports that i am not using (the mini usb hub the wireless mouse dongle and the wireless 802.11g usb card) when i get it done i will post it on these forums and let you guys know how it went.

i still need to know, if usb 1.0 will slow down 802.11g if the usb wireless card is a 2.0 card (you know since usb 1.0 is slower than 2.0)

If you are doing LAN transfers most definitely... you'll probably notice an extra delay with internet traffic to. USB 1.1 is only 1-2Mbps

if i use a usb 2.0 hub will it change my usb 1.0 to 2.0 or does it not work that way?

If you connect a USB 2.0 hub to a USB 1.0 port the hub will have to run at USB 1.0 speeds.


If you stuff a USB network adapter in your case, I wouldn't expect very good connection speeds and strength. But, I may be wrong...

what are you doing with your computer that you cant have a pc card stick out. I hope you know they only stick out about a half inch to an inch...

i have another question? i have a router card for my computer, is there anyways that it can work while the computer is off, the reason is the router card is installed in my mothers computer and she does not like to leave her computer running just so i can use mine, and thats a problem, will i have to buy a wireless router or is there a way i can make it work while the computer is off?
