Hello,
My WinXP Gateway M500 laptop will not connect to the internet. My PC was infected and I posed in the cyber safety section.- here is the link. (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159219)
The computer is now clean thanks to the help from Cybertechhelp moderator.
but I still cannot use my wireless connection to the internet.
I’ve tried to wirelessly connect at a few different places but it never sees any connections. When I click “View Available Wireless Networks” nothing ever shows up. I looked in device manager and it shows no problems and it's not disabled. I checked services and “Wireless Zero Configuration” is running
Thanks in advance for any help

You may have to reset you network layers. See the 2nd item inFixes section of this page (http://www.google.com/notebook/public/07327408241860359792/BDRQnSwoQveC4tu8h). You can try the steps there, if that doesn't clear things up, can you run ipconfig/all in a command window and post the output back here?

Yes, MS zero config is set to automatic and it starts.
I also noticed that most every time I restarted the PC the wireless connection would be disabled in device manager(it had a red X on it and said disabled). I would have to click on enable the the connection.
So now I went into services.msc and turned on all the services and now when I restart the PC the wireless connection is always enabled in device manager, But it still cannot see any wireless networks.
I also checked the BIOS to see if the wireless was disabled in there but I did not see anything that looked like it had to to with the wireless connection?

Is this an internal wireless adapter? Do you have the wireless adapter enabled? I believe the top multi-function button controls whether or not it is enabled.

Is this an internal wireless adapter? Yes, this is an internal wireless adapter.

Yes, a button on top contols wireless signal . but when I click it does nothing.
I never get any wireless signal and the status in device manager does not change form enabled to disabled or vice versa no matter how many times I push the button.

Is the wireless light on? See page 19 here (http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Mobile/8509164.pdf)
Does the light switch on and off when you press the wireless button on the laptop? Note that with some laptops you have to press Fn and one of the F keys which shows the wireless symbol.

I push the wireless button to turn it on, but the light does not turn on.

Can only be faulty hardware then. The cheapest solution would be to buy a wireless adapter (cardbus or usb). The other option is to get the laptops internal wireless adapter (could even be the button or wires to it) fixed.
What do you think Z1P? Any other conclusions or ideas?

I will borrow a wireless laptop card or usb and see if that works.
Thanks for the help z1p and G_Dem.

Sorry to barge in, but the ipconfig doesn't even register that there is a wireless adapter installed and enabled on the computer. If the computer can't enable it, the wireless light will not come on.
Go into device manager (control panels -> system -> hardware tab -> device manger) and expand the networking category. Is your wireless card listed there? If it is, does it have a yellow exclamation or a red x?

Thanks for barging in Archangel122184. I'm happy to receive any help

Yes, the wireless card is listed there. "CREATIX CTX712 Wireless LAN PCI Card" and no, it does not have a yellow exclamation or a red X. Although at first, every time I would restart the computer the card would show up as disabled as I explained in post #5, but now it doesn’t do that anymore. It shows up as enabled every time I turn the PC on. I Still have no wireless connection.

No the wireless light will not come on, but i think the ipconfig does register
the card by showing "CREATIX CTX712 Wireless LAN PCI Card" in post #3

You are right, my apologies. For some reason I read Ethernet adapter Wireless without the wireless.

Sad to say this is looking like a hardware issue where the button on your laptop is not turning on the wireless adapter.
