Windows Update error 80004002
Ever since somewhere in june I kept getting

error 80004002 when I attempt to update windows from the program.

I haven't got any restore points so that won't help

Any idea on what is going wrong?

Ok, let's try something else. If he hasnt been able to update since May, he will not have the latest version of the Windows Update Agent installed.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to the Desktop but dont do anything with it yet. See download links below.

For x86(32 bit) Windows:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe


For x64 (64 bit) Windows:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

Close IE and any open programs and then follow the instructions here. To access the command prompt in Vista, type cmd.exe in Start Search. You will see it appear at the top of the Menu. Instead of opening it, rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Type the below commands on the Microsoft page now.

Thanks I tried it, but when I tried installing the Update Agent, from the links. Half way through the installation i get an error

Installation Failed
error 80070002

And when I typed in step 3 (rmdir /s...) it asks Y/N, I put Y

Did you get this?

Go to Start Search and type:

cmd.exe

You will now see cmd.exe at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose"Run as Administrator" and then copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

dir /s /a "c:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

Ok try this.

Follow my previous instructions for opening cmd.exe again and rightclick on it and choose ""Run as Administrator" and then copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

"C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Wait until you see the command prompt again (>)

Close the command prompt and reboot. Try Windows Updates again.

Please post any error messages here.

It still doesn't work, comes up with the same error message

error 80070002,

could there be any services that need to be running for this to work?

Also Unlike the other person, I can't seem to be able to veiw my update history

Have you rebooted since running the commands in the link? If not, do so and tell me if you can see your Update history now.

Regarding your services, have a look here and make sure your services are set to the Default setting for your edition of Vista.

Can you also post part of your Windows Update log. You will find it in C:\Windows (C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log). It can be opened with notepad. Just post the last couple of days please.

I cant see the forced installed. Could you try my below suggestion again please and then post the latest windows update log if you still have a problem.

Still annoyingly doesn't work,

When you hit enter is it meant to start the installation

well you are using windows update i assume and if that is not working you can always do it manually by going to the windows site and getting the vista updates
