I discovered (or a neighbour did) that my wireless was wide open - all files visible to anyone who logged on. He's a network guy so he reset the system with encryption, but found it tough, as the main computer has a pci dsl which then routes out through a nic to the wireless router. When I got a new laptop I tried to add it, but ended up messing up the encryption on my first laptop (I can't figure how it was working anyway since it used non-hex letters) and have rewritten and eliminated so much network stuff I don't know what I've done, frankly. I do know that now I have a network ip conflict.

here is the main computer's ip config log. Note the nic's ip of 192.168.1.1:

The nic cable is plugged into a lan port, not the wan port, since it is downstream of the dsl. Then I have a crossover cable out of a lan port heading upstairs to a second desktop. It is now incommunicado too - no sharing or internet. One laptop runs XP sp2 with an airlink g network card. All these were working fine via ICS in the main computer and the rest of this configuration until I started fooling with it. The new one has Vista Home Premium and internal wifi. It is connected, enabled, excellent signal strength, etc. but no internet, no sharing as well. It can access the the d-link console from entering 192.168.0.1 and I worked through the wizard, creating a new encryption key, which I copied into the wireless settings on both laptops. Still nothing. I think one of the things I need to do is eradicate other wireless networks, but I can't see any of them in network connections. and the nic is stopped from acquiring a network address and the dsl, which appears fine, is not transmitting. Where do I start?

Okay, I deleted the wireless connections, reset the router, standardized all the wep encryption and have got all four computers seeing each other. But. Only the main computer with the dsl has internet. It is set up on the dsl properties tab for ics and netbios over tcp/ip is enabled. here is the ip config log from the main computer:

I am not getting ip conflict message anymore. Everything seems to be fine except the internet.

Again, the setup is: dsl> main pc (PIII-1GHZ XPPro SP2)> ethernet/nic> D-Link DI-634 wireless router LAN port >second pc (PIV-2.4GHZ) via LAN/crossover ethernet cable and wirelessly to IBMT30 and HPDV9000.

You need to make sure that the router has DHCP disabled and that it isn't using and IP address assigned to one of the PCs (192.168.0.254 should work)

Right. I probably lost that the first time I reset the router.

But when I went into the 192.168.0.1 online router console, disabled the dhcp and gave the router the .254 address, I lost connectivity. I now can't get into the console from any computer. An ethernet connection from the laptop to the router does not work either. I note that the lac nic (from main computer to router) can have dhcp disabled, too. Should I do that? I am getting really confused about what dialogue controls what.

Well, I can't say I know what happened, precisely. I wonder whether the router took a long time to reset itself? Anyway, all I did was go into the LAC and force the 192.168.0.1 ip (which it had already, as you can see above, unless the .103 is what was set) and the next thing you know, the whole system is working.

But thanks, Zip, as I think your suggestion that I change the router address to .254 and disable the DHCP was the key (I had done the latter before during a setup - found it on the back of my isp setup sheet written in a scrawl - think I'll write a file on all this stuff instead so I don't have to spend three days relearning it all). Thanks again.
