Defrag

Attempted to defrag Vista. Eight hours later it was still defragging. I attempted to defrag in Safe mode but no luck. Also can't determine how much it was fragmented. Any suggestions?

Vista defragger can be temperamental, to put it mildly. It doesnt play well if you schedule it and if the pc is off during the scheduled time. I gave up on the vista defragger quite a while ago...

Why don't you analyze and defrag the drive with a third party tool? Something like Diskeeper pro should do the trick quickly; and anyway, it defrags way faster than vista and actually shows you the progress besides having more options and an autodefrag mode. Also there are free trial versions at the diskeeper website, so you can try it out for free to see if that fixes the problem.

other solution - command prompt

There's another solution!

If you don't want to download a program to defrag, there's still a way to defrag using Vista alone.

Go to Command Prompt (under Accessories) and right click it. Select 'Run As Administrator'

That should bring up Command Prompt. From there, you can type it

defrag.exe -?

which will yield a list of commands you can use with defrag.exe

Some basic commands:
(of course, you can substitute c: for any drive or folder)

defrag.exe c: -a -v

(will run a -v-erbose -a-nalysis on volume C: Of course, you can replace c: with d: or any drive)

defrag.exe c: -a
(a more simple analysis of the volume)

defrag.exe c: -r
(performs a default partial defragmentation on the volume)

defrag.exe c: -w
(performs a full defrag that will try and fix all fragmented files no matter the size)

Hope that helps!
