Alright, so he wasn't really contacted by the actual RIAA, but if he keeps up with his downloading theres a good chance that could happen. Basically what happened was our internet company sent a letter in the mail saying that someone detected copyright infringement from his IP address or something of the sort.

Now that all the dust has cleared and we've figured that its just a warning, I have been searching for some info (the internet account is in my name. I don't want to be blamed should this happen again!)

I read from somewhere, PC WORLD I do believe, that securing the network can help prevent people from seeing what we download. That is where my question comes in

Can securing the network really prevent that all together, or would it just make us a little bit safer?

NOTE: I am in no way asking for ways to download movies without being caught, I'm just looking for a way to cover my ass in case my room mates continue to do so.

Howdy:

Short answer.. nope. Everything goes through your ISP no matter what and now that you have been flagged, you can bet they will be keeping a close eye on your account.

BTW, it is you that will face the music should something happen.

There's always the option of calling your ISP, explaining the situation and asking them for advice. Their letter indicates they already know there's a problem so it's not like you're going to be letting them in on a big secret.

My ISP tells me they send those letters specifically to get the problem solved before the RIAA gets involved. I imagine your ISP sends them for the same reason. They don't want to deal with the RIAA's stable of lawyers any more than you do.

One option you have is to block torrents at your router.
or to put the account in your friend's name.
