safe mode on start up
If I do not have my modem on when I start up the comp comes up in safe mode. If I shut down then turn my modem on the comp comes up in normal 98 se desktop. Went through step by step config but no errors come up. Have 128 ram. Problem seems somehow related to the Verizon modem (Westell) and/or the installation of a sound card (pro model for digital music recording). Ran lots of scan disks, fix errors. Whatever else I could find in what I have read. Anyone have any suggestions. I am about ready to back everything up and put in the recovery disks.

Hi eted, until an expert comes along (soon), I'd run msconfig (>start>run>type msconfig) and click the startup tab. Have a look in there as you might find the cause, something is calling for your modem at startup and you should be able to uncheck it

Thanks, have a new ethernet card. Onsale for 10$ and free installation. Was suggested since couldn't find the old one in hardware devices it could be bad, which it was, and that they may have been the cause of the safe mode start up. Whenever I read that line of yours "Can't get enough..." I am reminded of the song line "Can't get enough of that funky stuff." I guess funky Duff would not describe you though.

Yes, I am back to normal now, thanks. Planning to take some commmpusa courses. The song name I can't remember. I just remember the line, "Can't get enough of that funky stuff."
