I've been fussing with this for months now. I had a headset hooked up and it was working great, but then it got destroyed. So, I tried a different microphone and it refused to work. I reinstalled the drivers, but the settings did not go back to the defaults. Here is my problem:

Computer: Averatec 2300 Series Laptop
Microphone: ...Optimus? It doesn't really say on it. I can't get any to work, that's the problem.
Issue: The sound goes through the system microphone, even when I have a second one plugged into the microphone jack. It ignores whatever I plug in there as far as sound goes, although it does acknowledge that a jack was plugged in. My voice goes in through the system mic, instead.

I've asked on a couple of forums and nobody has been able to help me, I feel like either I installed the drivers incorrectly, or I have one setting wrong.

Can you disable the onboard mic?

I would have tried that already, I don't really know how to. How do I do that?

I don't know either. Check your user manual. I was able to download the user manual and will look to see if it says how to turn off onboard mic. Ok, manual doesn't mention an onboard mic. It does have two jacks in the front of this laptop, one for Microphone In and one for Headphones Audio Out. Are you sure you have the microphone plugged into the right jack and that Microphone option is not muted in your sound control panel.
