Hi. I am running Outlook 2003 on my home PC that runs WinXP Pro. One of the many email accounts I use Outlook to check is an Exchange server account for my job. Many, many times a day, I would get the balloon that pops up from my Outlook tray icon that says something to the effect of "Trying to connect to the Exchange server" (paraphrasing, of course), informing me that Outlook was having difficulty connecting to it. This got pretty annoying, and I learned how to turn those messages off by right-clicking on the tray icon and unchecking "Show Exchange Server Messages." This is a great fix except that I noticed that it's not permanent -- every time I restart Outlook, I have to uncheck it again. Is there any way to set that as a default value?
Thanks!

OK, I downloaded TweakUI and changed the balloon setting, which is great. However, I may have changed something else, too, because when I clicked "Apply," all of my icons reverted to previous Windows versions. I want my pretty XP icons back! How do I do that?
(Thanks for your help, by the way.)

I just realized that I also can't seem to change my desktop background now. I switched back to Windows XP theme and then back to Windows Classic, thinking that might reset my icons, but to no avail. Now I can't change the background. I go to Display Properties, like I always did, click on the Desktop tab, and browse for my preferred background. When I try to open it, it won't place it on the desktop, and only has the crappy old Windows backgrounds (Bliss, Blue Lace 16, Coffee Bean, etc.) listed there. It won't let me change it to anything but those. This TweakUI seems like a bad idea at this point... HELP! I just want my old desktop back!

Phew... crisis averted. A System Restore did the trick. Now my original question remains (sort of): if I reinstall TweakUI and ONLY change the Balloons setting, will it screw up my icons again? Or should I just do the registry edit solution?

Tweakui can affect a lot of settings.
You would need to check them all for what you want.
I would suggest just doing the registry hack on that page.
You can enter the registry editor by going to start/run
and type regedit in the box and click OK.

You guys have no idea what you're talking about. This is an Outlook/Exchange issue, most likely an Exchange connectivity issue.
How are you connecting? RPC over HTTP? VPN?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. I'm using my broadband connection at home with Outlook 2003. The account is set up as a Microsoft Exchange Server account through Outlook.

They are accessing a remote server and it is not unusuall to get
periodic disconnects.
His question was how to disable the balloon tips.
I supplied that information.
