Well I have an old W2k server that I have decomishioned a while ago and I have decided to install Linux on it. I downloaded an iso image for SuSe and ripped it to a DVD. Here's where my problem comes in. I only have a floppy and a CD drive on the old box. I hooked up my external DVD drive to it but I can't boot from it. Is there anyway to get it to boot from a USB device?

I don't think so. :( You may need to get your distro on CD. You should be able to take your download and burn the image to multiple CD's.

That's what I was afraid of. I am going to have to download the distro in a different format. I downloaded the DVD ISO format so it was all just 1 big file. I think the regular CD version was 3 cds worth.

check your bios and see if you can change your boot

I already tried that. It only gives me the CD, Floppy and Hard Drive. It doesn't allow me to select a USB device when I have the external DVD drive hooked up. Thanks.

Give Smart Boot Manager (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=4185) a try. Install it to and boot it from a floppy disk. It will allow you to boot certain devices that your BIOS does not normally support. It is not always able to boot usb devices, but its worth a shot at least. You might have to play around with the configuration one it boots to ensure it scans all boot records/disks.
