Cd-rom quit working. Installed a new one. It is detected in BIOS, but not in device manager. I installed a new cable from CD-ROM to motherboard. Switched the hard drive and cd-rom cables and the computer booted up normally, but still no CD-ROM. Any ideas on how to get the cd-rom back in the device manager?

If shown in the Bios its there! Try installing the CD Rom using the generic drivers by shutdown Windows, and restarting using the Win 98 Start Up Disk floppydisk.

When the Boot Menu reappears, type > SYS C: and wait for the displayed message that says: "system transfered" this will install the CD Rom generic drivers until you get it resolved.

I have a NEC NR_7700A that work fine using generic drivers. If you have separate drivers on a CD or floppy disk try re-installing using the Windows hardware installer found in the control panel.
