I have a few things that I need to address. These are notices frm
connection manager.
1. ATT340.dat 2. ATT122.dat 3. ATT73A0.dat 4. SUHDLOG AVG. 6DB_F.DAT All these are requests to reinstall the damaged profile. I have no idea what these things are and I also don't know how to reinstall them if I did. Can you help me.

Recently when I am starting up Windows I have occassionally be getting a fatal exception warning.

FATAL EXCEPTION AT018F BFF87164 It tells me to press any key to continue and to press cnt alt del to restart my computer.
When I do this the screen goes blue and hangs suspended for an awful long time. Being an impatient person and not understanding what is going on I press reboot and then I get the screen asking me to put the computer into safe mode. Done I now get a notice to go to setting and check device manager for conflicting programs yadda yadda yadda. Done I see nothing amiss. Next time I start up its fine for a while. Then I will go through this process again. I don't understand any of this. Pls help Jemma:(

Hi
I think you will have to re-install the videocard drivers,
and if it need directX, re-install directX8.1 as well

I would like to try to clarify the problem at hand.

The icon for this service profile is found in DISK 1 - VOL 1 (C)
it is represented by a square with different colored loops at each corner top r loop is yellow bottom r loop is red bottom l loop is aqua and the top l loop is green.
Double clicking this icon on any of the items, listed below, results in a notice that (this service profile is damaged, reinstall service profile)

AVG.HELP.DAT
DFLOC.DAT
AUTO EXEC.-AV
CONFIG. AV
CMMG.32
SUHDL. DAT
In the Disk 1-Vol 1 (C) file these things are represented by this damaged profile.

I am very new to all this cyberstuff and I would like to know what this service profile is and more importantly HOW do I (REINSTALL THE DAMAGED PROFILE) please help

hmmm
I Know I am not always easily understood
(even when I write sectionalised, it can get very convoluted)

hmmm
let us hope someone comes along that can explain things in easily understood steps

meanwhile...
I have questions
what program created these files?
suhdlog.dat is created during windows setup
imho, the AVG extention is a clue?

do you have anything like "goback" or "second chance" running?

--------------

Jaak
The avg program is my trial antivirus (grisoft)
cmmgr is the command manager for msn
I think the shulog is the scheduling agent for avg. (not sure)
in any case I don't know how to reinstall the damaged profile
that represents these things Can u help me with that. Everything seem so complicated. And I believe that there has to be a simple answer to it all. Am I just fooling myself?
I'm running windows 98 and 98 plus, microsoft office 2000 and subscribe to msn and msn messenger. added features are a HP photosmart printer, acdc, acrobat reader, yamaha stereo, and Hitachi something or other. I also subscribe to Incredimail and
have winfax pro. also use Outlook express and internet explorer.
I hope that some of this information will help. I really just want to know how to reinstall the damaged service profile. I believe the profile is part of the windows application but am not sure.
All your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Jemma;)

Dear GStone
Thanks for your response. I have copied the page and hopefully when I put it into application it will solve the problem.
I had not seen that particular page. But have read volumes and volumes of stuff, trying to solve this problem.
Thanks so much for your help. I will post my results back here.

I still don't know what the fatal exception problem was about.
I haven't seen it come up in the last couple of days but am puzzled by it. I get a bit panicked thinking that my computer is going to crash or something.

Boy am I learning the hard way here that ignorance is NOT bliss.
Whatever, happened to my nice quiet and peacful lifestyle. I think I suffer from computer daze............TOTAL CONFUSION!!!!!!!!

For starters, why not un install your AVG and follow the instructions on the MSN Messsenger and see if the problem continues then re install. Bad installs do happen on a regular basis.

:) to all who responded I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks.

Jaak without your request for the startup list. which I checked out very closely. the lightbulb moment when I realized what some of the abbreviations were would not have happened. Thankyou
GStone. I put the infor on the page you recommended into practice, uninstalled msn and reinstalled it by downloading it off the net as I couldn't managed to do it with my cd.
New member. I uninstalled AVG anti virus program and reinstalled it.
Many hours later when all was said and done I think that the problem has been eliminated with regard to the damaged profile.
Sincerely Jemma

I was going to suggest what you said worked. Basically by reinstalling the MSN programs you solved the issue, I believe. As for the fatal exceptions on startup you may be experiencing a viral infection so make sure your A/V has its definitions updated. Another possibility is that your system is having hardware issues, that is your mainboard or CPU may be failing intermittantly. I would recommend some benchmark testing programs to review their operational capacity. If you have completely reformatted your system and reinstalled then you may have missed the INF updater that comes with all mainboards. Without this update you can experience anomalies like this. Another way to isolate the Exception is to write down the code and then enter it into a search engine like google.com. Usually there is a geek out there that has experienced something similar and posted a problem/solution. Also make sure you have all the critical updates for Win98. If you notice the fatals happening in a specific program only then try reinstalling that program. Another way to identify hardware issues is to observe where errors are occuring and what you JUST did before the error happened. If, for instance, your mouse freezes and your keyboard is non-responsive (no CTRL-ALT-DEL activity) then your CPU is most likely hosed or ready to be hosed, replace and retry. If you have integrated video and you see Fatals at random times, especially when executing programs, then first make sure you have the latest MB drivers and Video drivers. These will be available on the manufacturer's website(s), collect serial or part numbers before looking too hard. I hope that this helps.
