Problems with reinstall of Windows 2000 Pro

Hi,
I am going thru a reinstall of Windows 2000 Pro due to a corruption of the op sys files by (I think) a failed automatic installation of an Adobe acrobat Reader update. My cmptr is a Gateway 1.4 GHz P4 w/640 MB of RAM. I have run into two problems which I can't seem to solve. First, I get an "E:\is not accessible. Incorrect Function" error message when I try and access a CD in my Memorex 52MAXX CD-RW drive. The drive will read program disks that I put in it - I have installed some applications from it, but when I try and access backup files I made before I started this process, I get the error message. I created the CDs with Nero from a session running in Safe mode. Also, I get the same message when I try and read the disks from the drive in my laptop. I have looked for new drivers for this unit but the only ones I can find are for XP. I have tried deleting the drive in device manager and rebooting but the drive reappears in the list and the properties say the drive is working correctly. I can read disks I created before the problems with Win2000 occured. Is this a problem with the disks I created to back up my files or is it a hardware or driver problem? If it's a problem with the way I copied the files, are they lost for good or is there a way I can retrieve them?

The other issue is there is a listing in device manager under Other Devices with a "?". The listing says "PCI Device" and the properties say the drivers for it are not installed. The problem is I don't know what the device is. I think it may be my floppy drive because it doesn't show up in the device manager under Disk Drives. On the other hand it does show up under My Computer and in Explorer. When I try to read a floppy it asks me to insert a disk in the drive.

I hope that someone can help me with this; I've tried everything that I know.

Thanks for your help.

Hi sbreslin welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

There is a small battery on the motherboard. Change that first.
