Media player wont play media?!?!?

For some reason out of the blue my media player says it cant reconize any codec. All of my other viewers can play the file but media player just refuses. I mostly use vlc for vids and winamp for music. Media player tho refuses to do ether. Ive redownloaded codecs a dozen or so times now, and according to the codec site i have all the latest drivers. I could really use some help if anyone knows what could possibly be wrong or if i just broke something and should set my computer on fire.

divx and when that didnt work i downloaded k lite which i have running on my desktop

K lite is codecs, when installed they allow you to play media in WMP. What do you mean you have it running on your desktop?

Sorry when i said desktop i meant desktop computer. Media player plays fine on it soi thought that my laptop would be fine runing the same codecs but it didnt help the situation at all.
